“One of the great experiences of Europe to the eyes of those who appreciate architecture” – Nikolaus Pevsner
Durham is a beautiful Medieval city which lies on the River Wear. Its Norman cathedral dominates the skyline and its historic core includes an 11th century castle and many protected historic buildings. The architecture of Durham is varied with examples spanning 1,000 years, and it was given World Heritage status in 1986. Although Durham still maintains its medieval street plan the old Market Place and other sections of the city have vibrant commercial and shopping areas. The city is also home to Durham University, a long-established institution, with buildings spread throughout the city.
